Photographer and videographer in Niger

Niger is where AFROTO has the most creators on the ground, and where our work is best documented. We have shot here for ALIMA, the World Resources Institute, Caritas International Belgium with its partner CADEV Niger, Search for Common Ground and the Franco-Nigerien Cultural Centre — from Niamey to villages in the Maradi region, from northern Tillabéri to the Tahoua region. Fifteen AfroCréateurs are based here, available within twenty-four hours.

What we shoot in Niger

01

Photography

Project reportage, institutional portraits, cultural event coverage. For ALIMA, in February 2022, around a hundred captioned high-resolution photographs were produced in health centres, among children treated for acute malnutrition — a setting that demands as much tact as technique. For the World Resources Institute, a hundred and fifty photographs in the Tahoua region, intended to document how restored land changes over a decade.

02

Video production

Documentary films, testimonial videos, donor visibility capsules. Six subtitled Full HD capsules for Search for Common Ground under the « Mu Gina Gobé » project, in border communes of northern Tillabéri and Tahoua. Two films on preventing child malnutrition for Caritas International Belgium and CADEV Niger, shot in villages of the Korahane commune, Maradi region.

Shooting in Niger, in practice

Seasons and light. The harmattan, from December to February, fills the air with dust and veils the light. The rainy season, from June to September, makes rural tracks harder to reach. October–November and March generally offer the best conditions.

Distances and travel. Our creators are based in Niamey and travel out to the regions as the brief requires. A shoot in the capital therefore comes together far faster than one upcountry, where the round trip has to be costed into the quote and the schedule alike. From Niamey, Tillabéri is about 120 kilometres away, Tahoua 550, Maradi 650, Zinder 900 — distances usually counted in hours on the road, or in a domestic flight.

15 AfroCréateurs in Niger

Fifteen AfroCréateurs are based in Niger, all living in Niamey and available across the country. They work in French, Hausa and Zarma — something our clients regularly single out. On the shoot for Caritas International Belgium, the fact that the videographer spoke the local language was described as « d'une aide plus que précieuse » — more than precious help. Equipment is on hand locally: camera bodies, lighting, sound, stabiliser, drone, studio and neutral backdrop, with nothing shipped from abroad.

No individual profiles are published. We select the most relevant creator for the assignment; the client does not approve them before the shoot.

What they say

Your strength lies in the high-quality control you impose throughout your interaction with the World Resources Institute and our partners, as well as your abilities to be fully bilingual, which ensured a smoother collaboration.

Frequently asked questions

What do you deliver at the end of an assignment?

Whatever the quote sets out, in the agreed formats. For Search for Common Ground: six Full HD capsules in two versions, subtitled and clean, plus photographs delivered in both web and print formats. We prefer to fix that list before the shoot rather than debate it afterwards.

What languages can you conduct interviews in?

French, Hausa and Zarma, with no interpreter standing between the person filmed and the camera. That is what lets people tell their own story rather than answer questions, and it noticeably shortens the time it takes to build trust on location.

How do you work around vulnerable people?

It is a significant part of what we do in Niger. For ALIMA, our teams photographed children being treated for acute malnutrition; the head of communications noted that they had « su appréhender les sujets avec tact, douceur et dignité » — approached their subjects with tact, gentleness and dignity — and had been « très appréciées par les équipes médicales pour leur écoute et leur prévenance », much appreciated by the medical teams for their attentiveness and care.
